Over 33% of S. Koreans Believe in Unification of 2 Korean States Within 5-10 Years - Poll

A total of 33.5 percent of South Korean citizens believe that two Korean states should be united within the coming 5-10 years, a fresh poll revealed on Wednesday.

Answering a question about the proper timing for unification, 19.3 percent of respondents said that this should be done within five years, 17.6 percent spoke about 10-20 years while 11.1 percent about more than 20 years, the poll conducted by The Korea Herald newspaper in collaboration with the JoWon Communication Innovation research firm said.

According to the survey, 14.6 percent of respondents believe that unification of the two Korean states is impossible.

This answer was especially popular among young people aged 19-29.

More than 68 percent of respondents said that the security threat on the Korean peninsula had eased since the June 12 summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.

The poll was conducted on Friday through Sunday among 1,000 South Korean citizens.

The situation on the Korean peninsula has significantly improved over the last several months, with North Korean leader Kim having held two rounds of talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and a top-level summit with Trump in Singapore.
