US- Based Muslim Organization Requests Protection For Mosques After Threatening Letters

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Nov, 2016 ) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a US-based Muslim advocacy group, has asked for protection after threatening letters sent to several mosques in the state of California.

According to a report published by online magazine The Hill, over the past week, three mosques in California have received letters warning that President-elect Donald Trump will cleanse the America from Muslims.

Citing multiple reports, the article said that the letters sent to the mosques warned that Trump will do to Muslims what Hitler did to the Jews. "There's a new sheriff in town", President Donald Trump.

He's going to cleanse America and make it shine again. And he's going to start with you Muslims. He's going to do to you Muslims what Hitler did to the Jews," the report said quoting the contents of the letter.

The letter warned the Muslims that they would be wise to pack their bags and get out." The letters were sent to two mosques in Long Beach, Claremont and San Jose, the Orange County Register reported.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has requested an increase in police protection of several Californian mosques in the wake of the letters. CAIR, according to the report, has issued a statement requesting the letters be investigated as acts of religious intimidation.

Citing the Southern Poverty Law Center, the report said that there have been more than 400 anti-Muslims incidents since election day.

According to a report recently complied by FBI, attacks against American Muslims has posted a surge last year.

A recent report in the New York Times said that neutral monitors and researchers in their finds have noted an "alarming rise" in some type of crimes linked to the presidential campaign and in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks at home and abroad since 2015.

Anti-Muslim sentiments especially rose after the Paris attack a year ago and later in San Bernardino that together killed several dozen people. The use of explosive language by some presidential candidates, including Trump, added fuel to anti-Muslim sentiments.

The FBI report chronicled a total of 5,818 hate crimes in 2015 " a rise of about 6 percent over the previous year" including assaults, bombings, threats, and property destruction against minorities, women, gays and others, according to the report.

Attacks against Muslim Americans saw the biggest surge. There were 257 reports of assaults, attacks on mosques and other hate crimes against Muslims last year, a jump of about 67 percent over 2014. It was the highest total since 2001, when more than 480 attacks occurred in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, according to the NYT report earlier this month. APP/zh/qmr
