UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Jan, 2018 ) :A spokesman for the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights Friday condemned US President Donald Trump for calling Haiti and African nations "shithole countries," saying there's no other word one can use but racist to describe the remarks.
Spokesman Rupert Colville said in Geneva that Trump's comments were "shocking and shameful". "It legitimizes the targeting of people based on who they are,Colville said, adding that the comments go against the universal values the world has been striving so hard to establish since World War II and the Holocaust." "This isn't just a story about vulgar language, it's about opening the door to humanity's worst side", he said.
Trump made the comments during an Oval Office meeting on immigration, according to American media reports. But at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, a spokesman for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reacted cautiously, citing the denial by President Trump of his reported remarks.
But, under close questioning, Spokesman Stephane Dujarric referred to the UN chief's "principled position" that migrants' dignity, human right and equality needed to be respected. But when told that the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva had already strongly reacted to Trump's remarks, Spokesman Dujarric said that the U.N. had many parts, each with an independent mandate.
