WASHINGTON, , (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Aug, 2017 ) - Military aircraft were searching the seas off Hawaii for five crewmembers of a US Army helicopter that went missing earlier in the week, the Army said Thursday.

The UH-60 helicopter was reported missing while conducting a night-time training exercise Tuesday evening off the island of Oahu. It had been taking part in a mission with another helicopter when it disappeared from radio and visual contact.

A search for the missing two pilots and three crewmembers was under way with aircraft from the Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

"Their collective search efforts are focused around a debris field found early Wednesday morning in the waters off-shore," an Army statement read.

Major General Christopher Cavoli, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division, said the missing soldiers' family members have been notified and updated on ongoing search operations. "They can count on our full support during this difficult time.

We are proud of their loved ones' service and will bring them home," he said. Officials warned that debris from the crash should be considered hazardous material.
