Warsaw, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th May, 2018 ) :Rescuers have found the body of the fifth and last Polish miner killed in an earthquake that hit a coal mine 12 days ago in the Poland's southern coal mining basin, officials said Wednesday.
Rescue crews worked in sweltering heat amid high levels of dangerous methane almost a kilometre (half a mile) underground at the Zofiowka mine in Jastrzebie-Zdroj to recover the unnamed victim. The JSW mining group, the owner of the mine, announced a weeklong mourning period for the dead miners on its website.
The May 5 earthquake had a magnitude of 3.42, according to the Polish Mines Office. Around 250 miners were working underground when the quake struck in the late morning. Local residents also reported feeling a strong jolt in their homes in a region where seismic activity is unusual.
JSW is the largest producer of coking coal used in steel production in the European Union. Coal is Poland's main energy source with 65.5 million tonnes mined in predominantly state-owned mines in the EU country of 38 million people last year.
