LAHORE, Feb 2 (Pakistan Point News - APP - 02nd Feb, 2017 ) : Punjab Sports Minister, Jahangir Khanzada on Thursday unveiled the trophy and logo of the first Pakistan women hockey league being played here from tomorrow, Friday. Players and officials of all the five competing sides, Lahore Lions, Islamabad Shaheens, Peshawar Deers, Karachi Dolphins and Quetta Panthers were present at the ceremony in which trophy and log were unveiled at Sports board Punjab.
The minister also presented impressive team shirts to the respective captains. Speaking on the occasion Jahangir Khanzada termed the holding of the league a step forward for promoting hockey among women. "This event will expose the young talent to highest level of competitive hockey at home besides identifying fresh talent,"he said. He appreciated the efforts of the Punjab Women Hockey Association for coming up with the idea of holding the league saying , "When I came to know about the idea of the women hockey league, I directed Sports Board Punjab to extend all the support.
It is very heartening to see girls from all parts of Pakistan assembled here to play hockey. Punjab government will continue to patronize women sports especially hockey." He said it was good to see that women folk was taking keen interest to play which is evident from the presence of young players in all the five participating teams. The Sports Minister said that the Punjab Government will extend full cooperation for the revival of hockey ,specially women hockey.
"With proper training and grooming our national women hockey team can perform to a higher level in the international events abroad,"he said. He wished best of luck to all the participating teams and urged them display spirit and discipline during the event. All the matches of the league which ends on February 8 will be played at the National Hockey Stadium and two matches will be played daily.
