LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th july, 2016) : The Supreme Court on Thursday taking a suo motu notice over sale of adulterated milk, sub-standard mineral water, sub-standard poultry feed and use of injections for enhancing milk in animals sought detailed reports from the Punjab government. The two-member bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman heard the appeal filed by Watan Party against sale of adulterated milk at Supreme Court Lahore Registry.
However, the bench converted it into a suo motu notice due to seriousness of the matter. Earlier, the petitioner-counsel Barrister Zafar Ullah arguing before the court submitted that adulterated packed and open milk was being sold in the market which was causing serious health problems among the masses. He said that there was no standard laboratory in the country to check the milk and water.
He pointed out that a petition regarding sale of sub-standard mineral water had been pending with the Lahore High Court (LHC) for past eight years but it could not be decided yet. At this, the bench deplored the situation and observed that if the circumstances remained unchanged then every Pakistani would become patient of Hepatitis. The court was also apprised about the use of injections in dairy animals for obtaining milk and sub-standard poultry feed. To which, the bench converted the appeal into a suo motu notice and sought separate reports from the Punjab government in two weeks.
The bench also directed Advocate General Punjab to present record of pending petition against sale of sub-standard water in the LHC.
