UN Urges Honduras To Deliver Justice To Human Rights Violation Victims

Tegucigalpa, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Jan, 2020 ) :The United Nations on Wednesday asked Honduras to prosecute those responsible for human rights violations against demonstrators protesting the re-election of President Juan Orlando Hernandez in November 2017.
"Two years after the events, not one single case of human rights violations has resulted in a conviction," the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Honduras (OHCHR) said in presenting its report.
The UN said at least 23 people, including a police officer, died during the repression of protests.
In March 2018, the UN presented a report in which it accused Honduran police officers of using excessive force and said 16 of the dead, including two women and two children, were shot by police.
It said some victims were shot while fleeing and that some of the deaths could "amount to extra-judicial killings.
" The demonstrations broke out after the electoral authorities declared Hernandez the narrow winner of the vote over television presenter Salvador Nasralla, with the opposition claiming fraud.
"The State of Honduras must urgently redouble its efforts to repair and remedy these human rights violations committed in the context of the 2017 presidential elections," said the Geneva-based body.
The report said victims "have the right to effective reparation in the form of restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, satisfaction and no repetition" of those events.
It also called for "the adoption of the necessary reforms to avoid a repetition of these violations."
