WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) Former US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's attorneys are requesting that he receive a maximum sentence of probation and community service, a court filing revealed on Wednesday.
Flynn's sentencing date is set for January 28.
"Given his extraordinary service and cooperation, a sentence of probation and community service is warranted," Flynn's counsel said in the court document.
Flynn's attorneys argued that there is no need for him to serve a term of imprisonment, pointing out he has already served over two years of probation.
However, Flynn's attorneys said that his crimes subject him to the sentencing guideline range of receiving zero to six months in prison and paying a fine between $500 to $9,500.
Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about holding conversations with former Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak, including regarding prospects for lifting US sanctions imposed on Russia.
Flynn originally agreed to cooperate with the investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller into allegations of collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. The investigation found no evidence of collusion.
