US Government Faces New Legal Challenge On Fracking Smog Threat - Environmental Groups

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) The Trump administration is facing legal action from two US environmental activist groups over the growing threat of smog from gas and oil produced by fracking, the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) said in a press release on Wednesday.

"The Center for Biological Diversity and Center for Environmental Health sued the Trump administration's Environmental Protection Agency today for delays in ensuring reductions in dangerous smog pollution from oil and gas drilling in 11 states," the release said.

The two conservation groups are demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) takes steps to ensure that areas violating air-quality standards for smog have legally required plans in place to remove pollution generated by oil and gas fracking, the CBD explained.

"The polluted areas are home to more than 80 million people - approximately one-quarter of the nation's population. Affected regions are located in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin," the release said.

People exposed to excess smog can experience reduced lung function, increased respiratory problems such as asthma attacks and premature death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25 million Americans suffer from asthma.
