Pakistani Prime Minister Calls 2019 Safest Year for Country Since 9/11 Attacks

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday that 2019 was the safest year for his country since the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, adding that this resulted in an increase in the tourist flow to Pakistan

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday that 2019 was the safest year for his country since the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, adding that this resulted in an increase in the tourist flow to Pakistan.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Khan noted that the security situation in Pakistan had deteriorated after the country joined the US' war on terror an international campaign launched in the wake of the 2001 attack, also dubbed 9/11.

"[The year] 2019 was the safest year in Pakistan since 9/11 ... And that was reflected in our tourism. Between 2018 and 2019, our tourism doubled in one year. This is the great potential of Pakistan in tourism which is untapped completely," Khan said, adding that Pakistan had significant potential for religious tourism.

The prime minister noted that Pakistani authorities were working on developing the tourism industry and intended to attract more investments to that area.

In 2001, terrorists from Al Qaeda (banned in Russia) hijacked four passenger planes, crashing two of them into the World Trade Center in New York and another one into the Pentagon. The fourth jet came down in a field in Pennsylvania after being initially directed toward Washington. Nearly 3,000 people from 90 countries lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.
