Mitiga Airport in Libya's Tripoli Suspends All Flights Over Recent Rocket Attack

Mitiga International Airport, the only functioning airport in the Libyan capital city of Tripoli, announced on Wednesday that it had suspended all flights due to a recent rocket attack it experienced

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) Mitiga International Airport, the only functioning airport in the Libyan capital city of Tripoli, announced on Wednesday that it had suspended all flights due to a recent rocket attack it experienced.

The airport often suspends its activity amid ongoing military confrontations between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the rival UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA). On January 9, the LNA included the airport in the no-fly zone due to its offensive to capture the capital, which is the seat of the GNA. However, the airport reopened after the sides announced a ceasefire three days later.

"Flights at Mitiga Airport are suspended due to random rocket fire," the airport wrote on its Facebook page.

Following the attack, GNA military spokesman Mohammed Ghnounou accused the LNA forces of firing rockets at the airport in direct violation of the truce.

Last Sunday, the Libyan sides and multiple international players gathered in Berlin for a conference to discuss how to resolve the long-standing armed conflict. The participants agreed to push for a political settlement and permanent ceasefire.
