NDMA relief activities in full swing in disaster-hit areas

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is carrying out relief activities in the disaster-hit areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Balochistan, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Jan, 2020 ) :National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is carrying out relief activities in the disaster-hit areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Balochistan, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The NDMA situation report on current rains and snowfall spell on Wednesday confirmed 79 deaths, 63 injured and 202 houses got damaged in the AJK due to avalanche. The death toll increased from 77 earlier where the injured were reported 56 in AJK.

The avalanche mainly affected the areas of Surgan, Kel, Lawat, Chaknat and Neelum Valley where most of the villages were reportedly submerged under the surging snow.

The relief items dispatched by the NDMA and other disaster management authorities in the affected areas comprised a total of 3,772 tents, 4,650 blankets, 2,570 quilts, 850 tarpaulins, 13.6 tonnes ration, 4,770 plastic mats, 1,950 solar lights, 100 kitchen sets, 150 mattresses, 1,250 sleeping bags, 3,600 miscellaneous clothing, 350 shoes, 250 First Aid Kit, 50 lanterns, 83 tonnes salt, 1,000 litres water, 14 dewatering pumps, 10 generators, 17.5 tonnes fodder and 50 cartons of emergency medicine.

The roads in Balochistan were cleared and opened for traffic whereas in GB all major roads were clear for traffic, however restoration work was in progress to clear few link and valley roads.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kalash Valley Road, Drosh-Shishikoh Road in Lower Chitral, Mastuj Road in Upper Chitral, Shangla Gali Road in Abbottabad District, MNJ Road in Mansehra District and Malamjabba Road in District Swat were blocked. The AJK's Neelum Valley Road at Sharda onwards, Leepa Valley Road at Reshiyan and Haji Peer Road at Aliabad were also blocked where the restoration work by the departments concerned was underway.

Chairman NDMA General Muhammad Afzal during his visit to Balochistan had announced a ex-gratia financial assistance package from the prime minister as an amount of Rs500,000 would be extended to the families of every deceased person while Rs50,000 would be paid to those who were injured.

Apart from this, a financial assistance of Rs100,000 would be provided to the families whose houses had fully damaged or collapsed while Rs25,000 to Rs 50,000 would be given to the partially damaged houses, it added.
