Russian Embassy in Greece Denies Claims Doctor Prevented From Visiting Vinnik in Jail

The Russian embassy in Athens has dismissed claims that a doctor was barred from visiting Russian national Alexander Vinnik in prison, saying that the man had undergone a medical examination

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) The Russian embassy in Athens has dismissed claims that a doctor was barred from visiting Russian national Alexander Vinnik in prison, saying that the man had undergone a medical examination.

Earlier this week, Vinnik's lawyers said that the embassy doctor had not been allowed to see their client, who has spent 30 months in a Greek prison without a court ruling over alleged cybercrimes.

"Media reports that the Greek side allegedly did not allow the embassy doctor to see Russian national Alexander Vinnik jailed in Athens do not correspond with reality. On January 20, the embassy doctor visited and examined the Russian national with the permission of the Greek authorities," the embassy wrote on Twitter.

Vinnik was detained in Greece at the United States' request in 2017, and remains in Athens' Korydallos prison, which is infamous for its poor treatment of inmates. The US accuses him of laundering $4 billion worth of funds through cryptocurrency trading platform BTC-E. Russia and France also seek his extradition on other charges. Vinnik has denied committing any criminal or administrative offenses.

Last December, Vinnik announced he was going on a hunger strike to protest his treatment in Greece. One of his lawyers told Sputnik on January 17 that Vinnik had already lost 37 Pounds.
