India's Supreme Court gave the government a month on Wednesday to respond to a slew of petitions against a citizenship law accused of discriminating against Muslims, media said
NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) India's Supreme Court gave the government a month on Wednesday to respond to a slew of petitions against a citizenship law accused of discriminating against Muslims, media said.
The law, which came into being on January 10, streamlines citizenship for Hindus, Christians and other non-Muslims who have fled Muslim-majority countries to India.
The top court refused to put the law on hold until it heard the governments' response to more than a hundred petitions challenging the legislation on the basis of constitutionality, the NDTV news channel reported.
The law was passed in parliament last month, triggering a wave of protests from Muslims as well as in Indian states hosting millions of refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
