Labling, Packing Can Fetch Better Price For Dates

MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th july, 2016) : Agriculture experts have advised farmers to adopt proper post harvest techniques and market dates with labelling and suitable packing to attract handsome price from domestic as well as the international markets. In a release issued by media liaison unit of Punjab agriculture department here Monday, experts said that July and August are the months when dates undergo the process of attaining maturity. Experts said that harvest of dates means plucking of dates properly from trees when these are ripe, their packing and marketing. Dates are harvested on two different times in accordance with their situation or different factors including their colour besides content of liquid and sweetness.

Proper harvest gives enhanced production of good quality. However, in some areas dates are harvested four to five times but in most of the areas bunches of dates arwe plucked from the trees. Ripe dates from the bunches are separated and the unripe ones undergo artificial process to get maturity and then sent to markets for sale. Labelling and packing have become important in the era of world trade governed under WTO rules and farmers and exporters should pay attention to these aspects to get premium price from the domestic as well as international markets. date is considered to be a complete food rich in proteins, minerals, iron, potassium, and fats.
