Zahid Fulfills Legacy Of Pledging His Organs & Tissues: SIUT

Zahid fulfills legacy of pledging his organs & tissues: SIUT

KARACHI, (Pakistan Point News - APP - 17th Dec, 2016 ) : Gifting of human organs and tissues by deceased persons is a great humanitarian legacy and this noble cause was recently followed by Muhammad Zahid and his family. An official of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) said here on Saturday that Zahid, aged 60 years, jobless, was a patient of diabetes and end stage kidney disease and was on maintenance dialysis for the past ten months.

During his treatment visits he and his wife saw several patients who had chronic kidney failure but their transplantation could not be carried out because of lack of family donors. Perturbed by the sad state of affair, he always used to say that `I want to donate my organs and tissues after my death to help others live on'. Zahid was further motivated by the recent selfless and altruistic donation of Abdul Sattar Edhi's corneas. He and his wife contacted SIUT's centre for organ donation and filled the pledge for deceased organ donation after which he was issued a donor card that he kept on his person at all times.

Zahid's wife Ms. Raees Fatima, completely shared and agreed with her husband's vision and when his condition worsened and he succumbed to his serious illness, she took the initiative to honour her deceased husband's desire and requested for the retrieval of his organs and tissues after his death for transplantation to deserving patients. Muhammad Zahid's corneas were implanted into two completely blind people. The first recipient was Arshad Ali, 42 years of age and a vegetable vendor, resident of Shah Faisal Colony, whereas the second recipient was Waleed Raza, 27 years from Quetta jobless due to his blindness.

The surgeries were successful in restoring sight and vision - a life changing experience for both of them. Zahid's donation has left a noble legacy for others to emulate so that the suffering of our society may be minimized, An SIUT statement here on Saturday said.
