Uzbekistan to Hold Parliamentary Election on December 22 - Central Election Commission

Elections to the Oliy Majlisi, the lower house of Uzbekistan's parliament, will be held on December 22, chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov told reporters on Friday

TASHKENT (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2019) Elections to the Oliy Majlisi, the lower house of Uzbekistan's parliament, will be held on December 22, chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov told reporters on Friday.

"In accordance with Article 117 of the Constitution of Uzbekistan, popular elections in the Oliy Majlis of the republic will be held on the first Sunday of the third decade of December of this year, in this case on December 22," Abdusalomov said.

He added that the election campaign would begin on September 20.

"For the first time in the election, five parties have the right to nominate their candidates," Abdusalomov said.

According to the electoral law of Uzbekistan, only political parties may nominate candidates to parliament.

Data from the CEC shows that more than 20 million citizens will be able to vote, with more than 2 million of them being first-time voters. Uzbekistan's population is about 33.5 million people.

The bicameral parliament has been operating in Uzbekistan since 2005. The 150-seat lower house was last elected in December 2014.
