VC MUET Inaugurates Women Resource Centre

HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Nov, 2016 ) : The Vice Chancellor Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aslam Uqaili Friday inaugurated the Women Resource Centre (WRC) established under the auspices of Women Society of Engineers Sindh Chapter at Mehran University, Jamshoro.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the university management was striving hard to empower women and through the recent initiatives of the University the women gender committee and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) have been founded to institutionalize the efforts.
He said that U.S.-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) was a driving force behind the establishment of this centre with generous support of American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and technically assisted by the University of Utah, USA.
The Vice Chancellor said female population was more than male and it was time to invest in human specially, women capital to strengthen the institutes which ultimate benefited the society. In most of cases particularly in the field of medical, he said the qualified women doctors prefer to be housewives rather to serve in the community in spite of huge amount of taxes of common people incurred on their education.
Dr. Uqaili said WRC has been established to provide central place for all gender related activities and it will help to implement MUET Gender Equity Policy and to transform policy principles into action plans.
The Assistant Professor of USPCAS-W Uzma Imran gave presentation and briefed about the objectives, functions, sustainability and governance of WRC. In her presentation, she said WRC aims at serving as a central facility to promote gender equity, diversity and full participation of women and girls in all the activities at MUET Campus.
WRC will take affirmative efforts to promote women friendly culture across the University and also will promote research on gender related issues in higher education institutes and other relevant academic disciplines, she added.
She said the resource centre will facilitate promote networking among girls students, women faculty and staff of different departments of various Universities. She informed that WRC will assist girls students in getting scholarships, trainings, internships and other learning opportunities and also will organize different events.
Among others, Pro-Vice Chancellor MUET Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali, Dr. Kamran Ansari, Prof. Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry, Prof. Dr. Abdul Sami Qureshi, Prof. Dr. Khanji Harijan, Shabnam Baloch, Hadiqa Maqsood, Nafisa Zaki, Quratul Ain, Attiya Baqai, Sahib Khatoon andMadeha Channa attended the inaugural ceremony of the resource centre.
