SC adjourns EOBI pension case for two weeks

ISLAMABAD, (Pakistan Point News - APP - 23rd Nov, 2016 ) : The Supreme Wednesday adjourned hearing of case against Employees Old age Benefit Institution (EOBI) for not increasing pensions of retired employees for two weeks. The court also appointed Attorney General for Pakistan as amicus curiae in the case. A three-member bench of the court headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan heard the case.

During the course of proceedings, different petitioners appeared before the court and informed that they were facing difficulties due to less pension. Justice Saqib Nisar remarked that the matter was pending before the court since long as former AGP Salman Aslam Butt informed the court that funds were reserved in 2014 Federal budget for EOBI to increase pensions of retired employees. He remarked that pension for retired employees was not increased till date. The Counsel for EOBI informed the court that there was additional burden of Rs 19.8 billion but it receives only Rs 12 billion. Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan asked what steps were taken for giving relief to old pensioners. The court directed the AGP to inform the court about steps taken to increase pension of retired employees after getting information from the government on next date of hearing.
