US Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Petition of Yemeni Citizen Held at Guantanamo - Ruling

The US Supreme Court announced on Monday that it has denied to hear an appeal application by a Yemeni citizen to be released from the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th June, 2019) The US Supreme Court announced on Monday that it has denied to hear an appeal application by a Yemeni citizen to be released from the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"Moath Hamza Ahmed al-Alwi v Donald J. Trump, President of the United States et. A; on petition for writ of certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit. No. 18-740 Decided June 10, 2019. The petition for a writ of certiorari is denied," the Supreme Court said.

Al-Alwi was captured by US forces in Afghanistan in December 2001 and has been held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center ever since without any charges being presented against him.

Al-Alwi appealed to be released on the grounds that the war in Afghanistan had now effectively ended although fighting involving US forces continues there.

The District of Columbia Circuit agreed with the US government that it may continue to detain al-Alwi so long as armed hostilities between United States forces and the Taliban and the al-Qaeda terror group (banned in Russia) persist in Afghanistan.
