UPDATE - Qatar Airways To Be 1st Airline To Receive Boeing's 777X Plane In 2020 - Chief Executive

ST. PETERSBURG (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) Qatar Airways will be the first company to receive Boeing's latest twin-engined passenger jetliner, the 777X, next year, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker told Sputnik on Thursday.

"We will receive next year 40 new aircraft into our fleet, which means that we will get 1 new aircraft one on average every ten days. We will also, next year, be the first airline to receive the 777X , which is latest aircraft from Boeing," Al Baker said.

According to Al Baker, Qatar Airways adds an average of 15 new destinations per year and is now expanding in Africa, Asia and South America.

"We will be announcing in Botswana, Ghana, we will announce Cameroon and we will announce Zambia and many another countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, both in this year and next year," Al Baker said.

The Boeing 777X, the latest plane from Boeing, was presented to company employees on March 13. Its maiden flight is reportedly expected to take place in late June.

Asked about the expansion of airports ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which Qatar will host in 2022, Al Baker said the expansion works were underway.

"We will be ready for the FIFA 2022 tournament, growing the capacity of the airport to over 58 million passengers at Hamad International Airport. At the same time, we are also activating Doha International Airport ... to receive another 10 million passengers," he pointed out.

The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
