MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th May, 2019) Spain's Ambassador to Russia Fernando Valderrama Pareja was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with earlier statements by the Spanish acting foreign minister, the ministry said in a statement Tuesday."Bewilderment and regret were expressed to him in connection with unfriendly statements by Spanish acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation Josep Borrell about Russia, which he made in an interview with El Periodico on May 23 this year," it said.
"The ambassador was told that the words of the Spanish politician, which are detrimental to the relations between Russia and Spain, contradict the mutual perception of bilateral relations as friendly, partner-like and mutually beneficial, which is fixed in all official documents signed between the two countries recently," the ministry said.
In a conversation with the publication, Spain's top diplomat, responding to a question about geopolitical challenges facing the EU, called Russia an "old enemy" and said Russia "is turning into a threat".
