Watchdog Urges South Africa to Prioritize Inclusive Education for Kids With Disabilities

An international human rights organization criticized South Africa on Friday for failing to keep its promise of designing an inclusive educational environment for children with disabilities and urged the government of the African nation to give first priority to this matter

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th May, 2019) An international human rights organization criticized South Africa on Friday for failing to keep its promise of designing an inclusive educational environment for children with disabilities and urged the government of the African nation to give first priority to this matter.

"South Africa has not delivered on its promises to guarantee inclusive education for children with disabilities and to ensure that they have adequate skills for employment," Human Rights Watch said in a press release.

The watchdog called on South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to "place children and young people with disabilities at the heart of the new administration's priorities."

In March the rights group interviewed dozens of parents of South African children with disabilities, who complained about being let down by the country's education officials.

"They were concerned by the lack of equal treatment of their children and said that their children's schools were not teaching them adequate skills to support their development, help them lead an independent life, and seek meaningful employment," the watchdog said.

According to the human rights organization, Ramaphosa acknowledged earlier this year that his country had "not achieved nearly enough" with regard to disability rights.
