WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd May, 2019) The US Senate Armed Services Committee approved a national defense budget of $750 million for fiscal year 2020, US Senators Jim Inhofe and Jack Reed said in joint press release on Thursday.

"The [National Defense Authorization Act - NDAA] supports a total of $750 billion in fiscal year 2020 funding for national defense, in line with the budget request and the NDS [National Defense Strategy] Commission report," the release said.

Inhofe and Reed explained in the release that within the total, the NDAA authorizes a base defense budget of $642.5 for the Defense Department and $23.2 billion for national security programs within the Energy Department of Energy. In addition, the NDAA authorizes $75.9 billion for Overseas Contingency Operations.

The totals reflect a transfer of $97.9 billion from the Trump administration's budget proposal for Overseas Contingency Operations base funding back to the base discretionary account, the release said.

The US Senate Armed Services Committee voted 25-2 to advance the legislation to the Senate floor.
