EU Cyberattacks Sanctions Mechanism Not in Line With International Law - Russian Diplomat

The recently adopted EU mechanism on sanctions for cyberattacks is not in line with international law as only the UN Security Council has the right to impose restrictions, Russian Ambassador at Large and Special Presidential Representative for International Cooperation Andrei Krutskikh told reporters on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) The recently adopted EU mechanism on sanctions for cyberattacks is not in line with international law as only the UN Security Council has the right to impose restrictions, Russian Ambassador at Large and Special Presidential Representative for International Cooperation Andrei Krutskikh told reporters on Monday.

On Friday, the European Council confirmed adoption of the new mechanism on sanctions for cyberattacks, saying that the measures would cover not only nations but also international organizations where such measures would be necessary to implementing the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy.

"All sanctions are adopted by the UN Security Council, that is why everything that is imposed bypassing the UN Security Council, is from my point of view not in line with the international legal assessment of events and reaction to them," Krutskikh said.

The possible new EU sanctions will include travel bans and asset freezes against states and non-state actors, suspected of being involved in cyberattacks.
