ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th May, 2019) Several electoral campaign meetings of the New Democracy, the main Greek opposition party, have been targeted by anarchists in Athens and the post city of Thessaloniki late on Wednesday ahead of European and municipal elections, the party said, describing it as an attack on democracy itself.
"The simultaneous attack of anarchists on the election meetings of the New Democracy in Athens and Thessaloniki, which were attended by former prime ministers Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras, as well as former party chairman Evangelos Meimarakis, were just one more instance of violence that we experience every day in the Syriza [ruling party] era. This is a direct attack on democracy," the party's press release said late on Wednesday.
About 20 people are believed to have attacked the electoral meeting in Athens, smashing the windows of opposition lawmakers' cars.
The party has demanded that the government provides proper conditions for electoral campaign, and warned that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras would be personally responsible for any violations.
Greece is set to hold European, municipal and regional elections on May 26. The New Democracy has been leading in recent European election polls over the ruling Syriza. �
