US Attorney General Asks Federal Prosecutor To Study Russia Investigation Origins -Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th May, 2019) US Attorney General William Barr assigned US attorney in Connecticut John Durham to examine the origins of the investigation into alleged collusion between US President Donald Trump's election campaign and Russia, The New York Times newspaper reported.

According to the media outlet, Trump has long called for the move, while law enforcement officials insist that the probe has been carried out legally.

Durham served as a special prosecutor and investigated wrongdoing by national security officials, including those from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency.

On April 18, the US Justice Department released the final report of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of collusion between Russia and Trump, as well as Russian interference in the 2016 US election. While the report said there was no collusion, it did say Russia had attempted to interfere in the election.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Mueller report did not contain any substantiated evidence to support the allegations that Russia had interfered in the US electoral process.
