MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th May, 2019) Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's brother and aide Hossein Fereydoun, arrested in July 2017 on financial misconduct charges, was sentenced to a prison term on Saturday, the head of the court department for public employees' cases said, without specifying the duration of the term.

"This person [Fereydoun] was judicially acquitted on certain charges but sentenced to a prison term on another part of charges. However, this was not the final court ruling yet, and I will therefore abstain from revealing details," Hamidreza Hosseini said, as quoted by the ISNA news agency.

Fereydoun, along with a number of associates, is subject to multiple investigations. The charges brought against him are, in particular, related to a 2016 scandal around inflated salaries for employees of state-run Iranian companies.

Fereydoun was promptly released on bail following his arrest. The trial into his case started in February.

Rouhani's supporters have suggested that the case against Fereydoun comes in the context of hardliners' attempts to undermine the Iranian president.

Fereydoun and Rouhani have different surnames, since the Iranian president changed his years ago.
