All 1,800 workers, who had been blocked in the platinum Thembelani shaft operated by Sibanye-Stillwater precious metal miner in Rustenburg, North West province of South Africa, were safely evacuated, the company said in a press release

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st May, 2019) All 1,800 workers, who had been blocked in the platinum Thembelani shaft operated by Sibanye-Stillwater precious metal miner in Rustenburg, North West province of South Africa, were safely evacuated, the company said in a press release.

"Sibanye-Stillwater ... is pleased to advise that all underground employees at its Thembelani shaft have been safely hoisted from the 14th level after a shaft inspection confirmed that it was safe to do so. Further inspections on the shaft infrastructure below 15th level will follow now that all employees have been accounted for," the press service said.

On Tuesday, Sibayne-Stillwater spokesman James Wellsted said that about 1,800 workers had been trapped at the shaft stations after the collapse of the rails, used to transport workers underground.

In February 2018, more than 900 miners were blocked in a shaft in the South African province of Free State due to a power outage caused by a storm.
