UN Envoy To Brief Security Council On Syrian Detainees In May

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st May, 2019) UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen told reporters he expects to brief the Security Council regarding the situation with detainees and missing persons in Syria in May.

"One of my top priorities from day number one has been the issue of detainees, abductees and missing persons," Pedersen said on Tuesday. "I will continue this work together with my team and also hopefully with support from relevant international actors, and hopefully will be able to report to you more on this when I return to the council later next month."

Pedersen said the Syrian government should take unilateral action regarding the issue of missing persons to achieve tangible results.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and militant and terrorist organizations. Russia, along with Turkey and Iran, is a guarantor of the ceasefire regime in Syria. Moscow has also been providing humanitarian aid to residents of the crisis-torn country.
