ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Nov, 2016 ) : The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Punjab government to form a medical board for proper examination of allegedly mentally ill death sentence convict.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali while hearing the case filed by the wife of death row convict Imdad Ali, directed the Punjab government to submit Names of five psychiatrists and psychologists for determining the mental health of the convict.
The court remarked that evidence did not determine that the convict was mentally ill.
During the course of proceedings, the counsel for petitioner told the court that the convict was mentally ill and needed treatment.
He pleaded the court for retrial of the case. The chief justice observed the retrial could not be allowed as the convict had answered all the questions before judge in trial court and was awarded death penalty, which could not be void. The court adjourned the hearing of the case till Wednesday and maintained its stay order against Imdad Ali's death warrants.
