North Korea sent the United States a $2 million bill for the hospital care of American college student Otto Warmbier who was held hostage in the country, media reported on Thursday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th April, 2019) North Korea sent the United States a $2 million bill for the hospital care of American college student Otto Warmbier who was held hostage in the country, media reported on Thursday.

In June 2017, Warmbier died days after being returned to the United States in a coma following a year spent in a North Korean prison.

North Korea wanted a US official to sign an agreement vowing to pay the $2 million for Warmbier's hospital care before they allowed him to return home from Pyongyang, the Washington Post reported citing people familiar with the situation.

The report added that a US official signed the pledge as directed by US President Donald Trump, however, the bill remained unpaid throughout 2017.

It is unclear if the bill was paid later and the White House has declined to comment on the matter, the report said.
