Five Climate Activists Arrested for Climbing on Train Roof at London Station - Police

At least five people were arrested at Canary Wharf station in London on Thursday after a group of environmental activists climbed on top of a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train as part of ongoing climate "rebellion" protests, the British Transport Police (BTP) said

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th April, 2019) At least five people were arrested at Canary Wharf station in London on Thursday after a group of environmental activists climbed on top of a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train as part of ongoing climate "rebellion" protests, the British Transport Police (BTP) said.

"Specialist units trained in protester removal were immediately deployed and have now safely removed those obstructing the DLR service. Five people have been arrested on suspicion of obstructing the railway," BTP said in a statement, adding that "services are expected to resume shortly."

The news comes a day after environmental group Extinction Rebellion (XR), which has been disrupting traffic at London's busiest spots since April 15, announced that it would end its Marble Arch and Parliament Square blockades on Thursday evening.

The group further stated that it planned shift their focus and highlight the "financial industry and the corrosive impacts of the financial sector on the world we live in" in its Thursday demonstrations, with seven activists gluing themselves to the entrance to the London Stock Exchange to that end.

The Canary Wharf station was targeted presumably because it lay in the heart of another busy financial district.

XR's campaign's efforts are directed at urging the government to immediately declare a "climate emergency" and implement policies to curtail carbon emissions. Protesters initially planned to continue their traffic blockades until April 29 before shifting their actions' focus.
