PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Nov, 2016 ) : Like other parts of the globe the World Diabetes Day (WDD) was observed here on Monday, where Associate Professor Dr Shahid Jamil Medical Officer Khyber Teaching Hospital stressed on educating masses and providing health care facilities at gross root level to tackle problem of diabetes.
He said that the menace of diabetes is immense but the solution should be practical, easy cost effective, adding that the analogy is like Malaria control rather than eradication. He said "We need to empower patients and their families through health education.
We have to work upon the Health Care Providers at the grass root level to tackle the problem. Specialists alone cannot handle the outreach," he added. He said globally an estimated 422 Million people are living with Diabetes Mellitus which is still increasing very rapidly and is projected to almost double by 2030.
Dr Shahid said that working in a Tertiary Care Hospital, more than half of the patients who are screened in OPD are Diabetics, which concludes that Diabetes is found in almost every family. APP/adi/rn
