Mozambique started moving people, who were displaced by Cyclone Idai, one of the worst weather-related disasters in the region in decades, closer to their homes, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd April, 2019) Mozambique started moving people, who were displaced by Cyclone Idai, one of the worst weather-related disasters in the region in decades, closer to their homes, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Tuesday.

"In Mozambique, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the national government and other partners have begun the work of relocating families displaced by Cyclone Idai back to areas closer to their places of origin," the agency said.

Over 1,000 people have been reported dead and thousands missing in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi after the worst tropical cyclone in decades, dubbed Idai, unleashed its wrath on the eastern Indian Ocean coast in March this year. At least 600 people were killed in Mozambique alone, while about 240,000 houses were damaged and 111,000 buildings were completely destroyed in the country.

According to the United Nations, the number of displaced people in Mozambique reached 70,000 people. It also added that the natural disaster left 1.8 million people in need.

On Monday, Russia delivered 30 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the disaster-affected nation.
