Martyshev's Legal Defense Asks US Court to Transfer Him to Prison in Pennsylvania - Lawyer

The legal defense of Russian citizen Yuriy Martyshev has asked the US authorities to transfer their client to a prison in the US state of Pennsylvania, Martyshev's lawyer Alexey Tarasov told Sputnik on Friday

ALEXANDRIA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th April, 2019) The legal defense of Russian citizen Yuriy Martyshev has asked the US authorities to transfer their client to a prison in the US state of Pennsylvania, Martyshev's lawyer Alexey Tarasov told Sputnik on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia sentenced Martyshev to 78 months in prison on charges of computer hacking.

"We asked the authorities to place Yuriy at Allen Wood prison in the state of Pennsylvania," Tarasov said.

The Allen Wood prison is not far from Alexandria, Virginia, where the court is located and Martyshev will be able to appear in front of the judge if needed, Tarasov explained.

"This prison has several security levels, and we are hoping that Yuriy will get the lowest one," Tarasov said, adding that the transfer may happen at any time if the judge decides so.

Tarasov acknowledged his client could have received a worse sentence, noting that Martyshev's co-defendant, Ruslan Bondar - a Latvian national - received a 14-year sentence.

"We asked for two years, the prosecutors wanted 15 years," Tarasov said.

Martyshev was arrested in Latvia on April 26, 2017, and was then transferred to the United States on a request of the US authorities. The two years in detention will be included as time served.
