BAKU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th April, 2019) Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and his Armenian counterpart, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, will meet in Moscow on April 15 to discuss the settlement of the conflict between the two nations in the South Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Sputnik on Thursday.

On Friday, Mammadyarov told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that a meeting with Mnatsakanyan might be held in Moscow soon.

"The meeting will take place on Monday in Moscow," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's press service said.

The information has been confirmed to Sputnik by the Armenian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Anna Naghdalyan.

Nagorno-Karabakh, a landlocked region in Azerbaijan with a predominantly Armenian population, proclaimed independence in 1991, which was followed by a bloody three-year war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The tension in the area continues, resulting in occasional violence. The latest escalation of tensions in the region happened in April 2016.

Some of the efforts to reach a peaceful solution for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict include the creation of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, which is co-chaired by Russia, the United States and France, in 1992. Additionally, late March 2019, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held his first official meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Vienna to discuss the situation in the disputed region. Both sides commended the talks.
