The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority approved on Tuesday a project for the world's first drone delivery service to start operating in the country's capital of Canberra
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th April, 2019) The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority approved on Tuesday a project for the world's first drone delivery service to start operating in the country's capital of Canberra.The Project Wing drone delivery service has been trialing its technology in Australia for the past 18 month by partnering up with local businesses to test run delivering customers food, drinks, medication and coffee with the use of drones.
"We have approved Wing Aviation Pty Ltd to operate ongoing delivery drone operation in North Canberra ... They have satisfied us that their operation meets an acceptable level of safety," the aviation authority said in a statement.
The autonomous delivery system is expected to start its work in the coming weeks in Canberra and its surrounding suburbs and will only be available to 100 eligible homes, but is expected to gradually introduce more homes.
Project Wing, an offshoot of Google's parent company Alphabet, carried out its first drone delivery in 2014. Since then, the company has been developing, testing and perfecting the design of the delivery drones. The company aims to increase access to goods, reduce traffic congestion in cities and help reduce global levels of carbon emissions.
