NAIROBI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 10th Nov, 2016 ) : Kenya's two-time world and Olympic 800 metres champion David Rudisha has been appointed to chair the African Athletics Confederation (AAC) Athletes' Commission, replacing former Namibian sprinter Frank Fredericks.
Rudisha's appointment was made by AAC president Ahmad Kalkaba Maboum who also appointed four other new members to the body. They include former Nigerian sprint queen Mary Onyali, who will serves as Rudisha's deputy, Hakim Toumi of Algeria and Ivorian Amandine Affoue Allou.
"The president of the African Athletics Confederation has chosen you for many objective reasons to lead the destiny of this important commission," CAA secretary Lamine Faty, said in a letter to Rudisha seen by AFP.
This is the first administrative post for Rudisha, who will now sit on the CAA technical committee and advocate for athletes' issues. Rudisha set a new world record of 1:40.91 for the 800m at the 2012 London Olympics and became the first athlete in 52 years to successfully defend the title at the Rio Olympics in August.
The 27-year-old said he was excited to take up the role at a challenging time when the sport is faced with major issues including doping. "I am happy to take up the new position. I will work for the welfare and unity of all the athletes in Africa," Rudisha said.
The CAA Athletes' Commission will consist of seven members, with the remaining three nominees from Ethiopia, South Africa and Cameroon to be appointed in December.
