MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th March, 2019) The United Russia party intends to hold talks with Syria's ruling Arab Socialist Baath Party in April, Andrei Klimov, deputy chair of the Russian upper house's International Affairs Committee, told Sputnik on Thursday.

"In June, we plan to hold a videoconference with Syria on the issue of protection of state sovereignty," Klimov said, noting that the political parties would discuss preparations for the conference and interparty cooperation in April.

Deputy Speaker of the Russian upper house Andrei Turchak paid a visit to Syria last year, during which he held a series of meetings with the country's leadership and Baath representatives, among others. A cooperation agreement between the two political parties for the period of 2018-2020 was also signed during Turchak's visit.

Russia, Turkey and Iran are the guarantors of the ceasefire in Syria, having signed the Astana agreements on the creation of Syrian de-escalation zones in 2017. Russia has also been engaged in the reconstruction process in Syria and has helped Damascus with repatriating refugees.
