At Least 10 Dead in Mogadishu Ministerial Building Terror Attack, Siege Over - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd March, 2019) At least 10 people died as a result of a terror attack on two ministerial buildings and a police station in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, local media reported on Saturday, citing police.

Earlier in the day, A car bomb exploded in central Mogadishu next to the ministries of labor and public works and the city's central police station. Following the explosion some heavily-armed militants stormed the compound and shot several people inside. Another car bomb explosion followed. Somalian security forces stepped in and exchanged fire with the militants for several hours.

"The operation is over and the building is now controlled by the security forces. The attackers were shot dead, their bodies are inside the building," Capt. Osman Mohamed said as quoted by Somalian news outlet Garowe Online.

Somalian Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Saqar Ibrahim Abdalla has been confirmed to be one of the victims in the attack.

The al-Shabab terrorist organization had taken responsibility for the attack, as the news outlet previously said.

Somalian President Mohamed Abdullahi and Prime Minister Hassan Khaire have sent a message of condolences over the loss of the minister and other people who were killed in the terror attack.

Al-Shabab emerged in Somalia in 2006 and has claimed numerous terrorist attacks throughout the region. The group has sworn allegiance to the al-Qaeda terrorist organization (banned in Russia). The group is trying to overthrow Somalia's Western-backed central government. The United States has led a series of airstrikes against the terrorist organization.
