GENOA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) The United Nations welcomes the proposals on Rukban refugee camp in Syria recently made by Russia and Syria, including the creation of a working group to evaluate the situation on the ground, Samir Elhawary, the deputy head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told Sputnik on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, the Russian and Syrian coordination staffs made a joint statement in which they invited the United States and Jordan to take part in a meeting on March 26, during which it is planned to agree on measures to dismantle the Rukban camp. Russia and Syria also invited the representatives of the United States, Jordan and the United Nations to join Russia and Syria to participate in forming a working group to assess the situation in the camp.

"The United Nations welcomes dialogue with all relevant parties to further clarify the return and relocation process [of the Syrian refugees] and to ensure that any movement is safe, voluntary, well informed, dignified and in line with protection standards. This includes the proposed establishment of a working group involving relevant parties," Elhawary said.

"The United Nations welcomes efforts to find durable solutions for the people of Rukban, which is in line with the results of the intention survey carried out by the United Nations and SARC [Syrian Arab Red Crescent], in which 95 percent of the people surveyed expressed a desire to leave, while many also stated protection concerns," he added.
