Poroshenko Backs US Ambassador in Ukraine After Prosecutor's Controversial Statement

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced on Friday full support to US Ambassador in Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch after a scandalous statement by Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko that the ambassador had given him a list of people he should not prosecute

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced on Friday full support to US Ambassador in Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch after a scandalous statement by Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko that the ambassador had given him a list of people he should not prosecute.

Lutsenko said in an interview with Hill.tv released on Wednesday that Yovanovitch had given him the "do not persecute" list during their first meeting. The prosecutor slammed the move as "unacceptable." He also said that his office did not receive almost $4 million, which the US Embassy was supposed to transfer to his department. On Thursday, the embassy refuted Lutsenko's claims.

"I would like to note the important role of US Ambassador in Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in promoting Ukrainian-US relations. I note that she has my full support, as the representative of the United States and President Donald Trump, who is a great friend of Ukraine and my friend," Poroshenko said.

Lutsenko became Ukraine's Prosecutor General in May 2016. Yovanovitch was sworn as US ambassador to Ukraine in August the same year.
