WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed the conflicts in Syria and Yemen with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah during a visit to Kuwait City, State Department spokesperson Robert Palladino said on Wednesday.

"The Secretary thanked the Amir for his longtime partnership with the United States and his positive engagement on many regional issues, including the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) dispute [over Qatar], Syria, and Yemen," Palladino said in a readout of the meeting.

Both leaders underscored importance of a united GCC for achieving regional prosperity, security and stability, as well as countering Iran's activity in the middle East, he said. They also discussed the third US-Kuwait Strategic Dialogue, which Pompeo attended in Kuwait City.

Qatar has been under a diplomatic and economic blockade since June 2017, when the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt, among others, severed diplomatic relations with Doha, accusing it of supporting terrorism and interfering in their internal affairs. Qatar has refuted the allegations. In response, Doha limited its activities within the GCC, and also ceased participation in the Saudi-led Arab coalition, which is conducting military operations in Yemen.

Pompeo is currently on a five-day tour of the Middle East with scheduled stops in Kuwait, Israel and Lebanon.
