MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) A police officer was injured in a gunfight near a police station in the northern Afghan city of Mazari Shariff, Balkh province, local media reported on Thursday, citing sources.

Over one hundred tanks have been positioned near the station, the TOLOnews broadcaster said.

The gunfight took place amid protests against Gen. Abdul Raqib Mubariz's appointment as Balkh's new police chief. Former Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor, who firmly objected the designation, called on local residents to skip job and shut their businesses as a sign of protest.

The broadcaster noted, citing the spokesman of the Afghan Interior Ministry, that at least 25 armed people were detained after the shooting. The situation in Mazari Shariff is reportedly under control of the country's security forces.
