NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / NNI - 12th March, 2019) Firebrand young Indian caste leader Hardik Patel Tuesday joined the opposition Congress party in western state of Gujarat, the party said.Patel joined the Congress party in the presence of party president Rahul Gandhi during the party's Working Committee meet in Ahmedabad.The 25-year-old Patidar leader intended to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections from Gujarat's Jamnagar constituency.
Reports said Patel supported the Congress party in the 2017 Gujarat local elections in which the party gave a stiff competition to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).In 2015 massive caste protests by Patels, or the Patidar caste, rocked Gujarat demanding quotas in government jobs, following which Patel was arrested and charged with sedition. He was later on released on bail after nearly nine months in jail.In the previous general elections in 2014 BJP won all 26 parliamentary seats in Gujarat.The Congress party party kick-started its campaign Tuesday in Modi's home turf Gujarat.
