Spain Ready to Assist Venezuela Amid Blackout - Foreign Minister

Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said on Tuesday that Madrid was ready to assist Venezuela in overcoming its energy crisis

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said on Tuesday that Madrid was ready to assist Venezuela in overcoming its energy crisis.

"One cannot live without electricity forever. Venuzuela can rely on us, if we can solve this problem ... I believe there is a fundamental problem with the [electricity] network and its ability to operate, and we can help with it," Borrell said in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

The blackout swept Venezuela on March 7, as national electricity supplier Corpoelec reported about "sabotage" at the major Guri hydroelectric power plant. Media subsequently reported about power outages in 21 out of 23 Venezuela's states. Maduro blamed the United States, which backs the Venezuelan opposition, for waging an energy war against Venezuela, while Washington denied having a role in the crisis.

The Venezuelan Armed Forces have introduced an air surveillance system over the country's power lines in order to prevent further incidents, while Venezuela's opposition-run National Assembly, whose authority has not been recognized by any other branch of power since 2016, endorsed on Monday a declaration of the state of emergency amid the blackout.
