New Surf Excel ad promoting Hindu-Muslim harmony sparks controversy in India

Amid Hindu-Muslim tensions already heightened, the radical segments in India lashed out at the brand for its message of religious harmony

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 11th March, 2019) Detergent brand Surf Excel comes under fire for promoting Hindu-Muslim harmony in a recent ad.

The ad features a Hindu girl wearing a white T-shirt and riding a bicycle as she plays Holi with her friends.

While she rides the bicycle, she asks the neighbourhood kids to throw colour water balloons on her.

When the kids are done throwing colours balloons on her, she finally goes to her Hindu friend’s place and signals him to come out.

The Hindu girl then drops her Muslim boy safely at a nearby mosque to pray.

The ad concludes with its tagline "Daag achey hain" (Stains are good).

As much as the ad gives a message of peace and religious harmony, it was probably not a great time of coming up with such an idea.

Amid Hindu-Muslim tensions already heightened, the radical segments in India lashed out at the brand for its message of religious harmony.

#BoycottSurfExcel is thus trending on Twitter as people are criticising the ad for playing down Hindu’s Holi against the Muslim’s prayer.

At the same time, many people are supporting the ad and the message of love and compassion it gives.
