Media Urged To Play Responsible Role In Highlighting Issues

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Nov 7(UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 07th Nov, 2016 ) : Vice Chancellor Gomal University Prof Dr Muhammad Sarwar has underlined the need for media to be more responsible when presenting news to the public.
Addressing a seminar here on Monday, the vice chancellor said since media had been playing a pivotal role in promoting transparency and good governance in the society, so it should perform its duties in more responsible manner to achieve the objective and avoid chaos in society.
He said that media had the right to criticize the government and its policies, but certain media groups, anchors and writers were found indulging in personal criticism that was against the ethics of journalism, he observed.
One other hand, it was also important, he added, to respect and uphold right of media to freedom of expression, adding its role could not be overlooked in promoting democracy and resolving masses’ problems in the country.
He said media was playing a role, as opinion leader and promoted culture of a society, so there was a need to gear up media to effectively counter anti-social elements, which cause damage to the country’s rich cultural values.
Referring to China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, the vice chancellor said it involved billions of Dollars worth schemes, which would bring prosperity not only for the two countries but for the region as well.
Similarly, he added this mega project would create job opportunities and the country would move ahead on the path of progress and development. He said CPEC would link the backward areas of the Balouchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the rest of the country and bring prosperity there.
However, he added, conducive economic environment was also vital to bring foreign investment in the country. In this regard, he added media should also play its role for ensuring peace and suitable environment to fully capitalize on the project for achieving socio-economic development of the country.
He also urged the university administration to work with more dedication and devotion to ensure quality education and prepare the students for facing contemporary and future challenges. Other speakers including Prov Vice Chancellor Bakhtiar Khattak and Chairman Journalism and Mass Communication Prof Dr Aslam Pervaiz also highlighted the role of media.
